OUR GOAL
On May 1st, 2008, at the height of the presidential campaigns, 30,000 people marched through Downtown Milwaukee with a clear message for the candidates: No stalling! Just and dignified immigration reform legislation must be a priority.
It is a message we have continued to make clear now that President Obama is in the White House.
Legislation needs to be fundamentally pro-worker and address not just the needs of immigrants, but also the need for fair trade, education and training opportunities for US low-wage workers.
Voces de la Frontera works hard with its allies to push for such legislation.
OUR TRADITION - Milwaukee leads the way
Immigrant mass mobilizations for change are now a strong Milwaukee tradition. Voces de la Frontera organized three mass marches in 2006, totalling over 125,00 participants.
On May 1, 2007, Voces held the second annual "A Day Without Latinos" where over 120 businesses closed and over 80,000 from around the state marched in Milwaukee - the largest ever march in Wisconsin and also the largest in the nation.
In 2008 and 2009, Voces continued its leading role in the national movement, again mobilizing the biggest May Day marches in the country.
