IMMIGRATION REFORM
On May 1st, 2008, 30,000 people marched through Downtown Milwaukee with a clear message to the next President of the United States: No stalling! Just and dignified immigration reform legislation must be a priority for your First 100 Days in office.
This latest mass mobilization for change builds on what is now a strong Milwaukee tradition. Voces de la Frontera organized three mass marches in 2006, totalling over 125,00 participants. On May 1, 2007, Voces held the second annual "A Day Without Latinos" where over 120 businesses closed and over 80,000 from around the state marched in Milwaukee - the largest ever march in Wisconsin.
All of these marches carried a clear message: that legislation is needed that is fundamentally pro-worker and can address not just the needs of immigrant workers, but also the need for fair trade, education and training opportunities for US low-wage workers.
Voces de la Frontera continues working with its allies to push for such legislation.
Myths & Facts
Myth: Weak border enforcement has led to high undocumented immigration
Fact: The Border Patrol's budget has increased tenfold since 1986, but border crossings have continued despite the risks. This is because of the effects of U.S. trade policies south of the border and a lack of legal avenues for immigrants to enter the U.S.,
compared to the number of jobs available.
